Most Haunted star Derek Acorah dead at 69 says wife

TV psychic Derek Acorah has died at the age of 69, his wife has announced.

The self-styled medium, whose real name is Derek Johnson, appeared on Celebrity Big Brother in 2017 and launched the paranormal reality TV series Most Haunted in 2001.

His wife, Gwen Acorah, shared the news in a statement on his official Facebook page, declaring that she would "miss you forever."

She said: "Farewell my love! I will miss you forever! I’m devastated to announce that my beloved husband Derek has passed away after a very brief illness.

"Thank you so much to everybody who has supported me - I can never thank you enough."

Mrs Acorah said her husband had also been targeted by a "vile couple" hounding him for responses to their "ridiculous campaign" while he was in intensive care in a coma, but did not reveal any further detail.

Mr Acorah was born in Bootle in 1950, and was once on the books of Liverpool FC in the Bill Shankly era, but left without playing a first team game.

After his football career ended in Australia, Mr Acorah featured in regular segments on 1996 Granada TV show The Psychic Zone before becoming a contributor on spin-off show Psychic Livetime.

He found widespread fame with Most Haunted, before leaving the show after six seasons.

He appeared in a number of other specials and series, including Michael Jackson: The Live Seance, which saw the medium attempt to contact the singer's spirit.

He finished fourth in Celebrity Big Brother 2017.
