Most festive street in Glasgow - neighbours band together to raise cash and spread Christmas cheer

We love a good festive theme here at Glasgow Live - I mean really, who doesn't?

That's why this cul-de-sac of houses in Newton Mearns has truly caught our attention - it is truly stunning.

And, not only are the residents on Lavender Drive spreading some much needed festive cheer, but over the past two years they have managed to raise thousands for the Beatson Cancer Charity and Cancer Research UK.

As you turn the corner into Lavender Drive on the new estate, every house is dripping in fairy lights. They aren't just chucked up either, but placed methodically and strategically. There is even a friendly snowman to welcome you to Newton Mearns's answer to the North Pole!

The idea to change the street into a winter wonderland came out of the depths of lockdown.

A resident who lives on the street told Glasgow Live: "Last year at this time of year we were in lockdown number two. It was an idea as a means to lift people's spirits. All the neighbours on the street got together to decorate our houses and there was co-ordination and everyone got involved.

"Especially one of our neighbours was diagnosed with terminal cancer and has been going to and from hospital for treatment. It was partly to lift their spirits too.

"We noticed people were coming by to the see the lights - partly because they didn’t have anything else do as everything was shut - but people were coming with their kids and grandparents.

"We decided to put a collection bucket out for the Beatson Cancer Charity and it raised over £5k."

This year, the street celebrated by having a Christmas light switch on with mulled wine and mince pies as a sort of street party.

"This time we’re doing the same but for Cancer Research UK. People were really generous" the neighbour continued.

"There isn't really a theme but everyone has doubled down on it this year - everyone is really going to town even more than last year.

"It was nice event for the community. There’s always been a community feel in this area - its a new-build estate so we all moved in at the same time but there are two neighbours in particular, Ralph and Lynette who are at the heart of it all.

"I don’t want to commit anyone to anything but I find it hard to believe we won’t make it a tradition!"

"We have some good competition from the surrounding streets but I do think what is unusual is that the whole street is involved."

"It really is incredible when you come around the corner at the top of the street and see it laid out to you - it really feels like coming home.
