Most ECHO readers say they won't be backing England on Sunday

It was a close run thing but just over half of readers who responded to our survey said they won't be backing Gareth Southgate's men on Sunday.

In a survey conducted by the ECHO to try and gauge the feeling towards England in Sunday's final of the Euro's, we received 2872 to the question "Will you be supporting England on Sunday?"

Answering the question, 53% of respondents said no while 47% said they will be flying the flag.

When asked why they won't be supporting the England team, out of 1,683 people who answered, 53% said it was because they were "Scouse not English".

But that wasn't the only reason, 31% said they just didn't like England fans while 13% said they didn't like the team, and 3% said it was because they don't like football.

We also asked who people thought would win Sunday's final.

Out of 2,790 responses to this question, 39% thought Italy would win in normal time compared to just 25% who thought England would win in 90 minutes.

However, Italy didn't have it all their own way. If the match goes to extra time, 15% said they thought England would triumph compared to just 9% believing Italy have the legs for it.

But when it came to penalties it was the same old story. 7% think the Italians will win on penalties compared to just 4% believing England could steal it at the final gasp.

As a bit of fun, we also asked people what they thought Gareth Southgate should say to the players just before the match.

This question received a much more positive response from readers towards the England team.

One person said: "Father's have passed away without ever seeing England in a final. Do it for them, do it for the kids and build something that will last in the minds of generations to come. Go make yourselves heroes."

Another said: "You can do this! I'm a Scouser and will be right behind our national team."

Other words of wisdom included: "Keep calm, go out and do it for England and yourselves."

While another person said: "Enjoy playing and the moment. Soak up the atmosphere in the stadium and score lots of goals. Be happy no matter what."

It seems that while a small majority in the city may not be fully behind England, there are still many out there hoping it's coming home.
