Most coronavirus cases recorded in Tuggeranong, but inner south has highest infection rate

Parliament sat, appropriately social-distanced, in Canberra this week.

More than 6,000 Canberrans have tested negative to coronavirus, as data reveals Tuggeranong in Canberra's south has more confirmed cases of COVID-19 than any other part of the city.

There have been 103 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the ACT, with three new cases recorded in the past 24 hours.

On Thursday it was revealed an intensive care nurse from the Canberra Hospital was among those infected.

Acting Chief Health Officer Vanessa Johnston said the nurse self-isolated as soon as they felt symptoms and it was believed a close contact who had returned from overseas, not a patient, had passed the virus to the nurse.

The ACT Government did not release the employee's sex or age.

On Friday health authorities confirmed more than 6,000 people had tested negative to coronavirus in the ACT and more than half of all confirmed cases of COVID-19 had recovered.

There are 42 current cases of the virus within the ACT.

Two people have died from the respiratory illness.

Most COVID-19 cases in Tuggeranong

According to new details released by the ACT Government, the city's south is more affected by coronavirus than the north.

The Government said it was monitoring locations as part of tracking how the disease spreads.

However, given the small number of cases to date, the geographic data lacks statistical significance.

Twenty-four cases have been recorded in the Tuggeranong Valley, which has an older population than Canberra as a whole.

But, on a per capita basis, it is the inner south that has the highest rate of confirmed infections.

According to the data, there have been 17 cases recorded in Canberra's inner south, where, with a smaller population, the infection rate is almost double that of the Tuggeranong town centre.

There have been 16 cases recorded in Gungahlin, 12 in Canberra's inner north and 13 in Belconnen.

To the south of Lake Burley Griffin there have been 11 cases recorded in Woden and seven in Weston Creek.

The remaining three cases are located in more remote areas of the ACT, including to the west of the city at Uriarra Village.
