The French Muslim Council (CFCM) on Sunday asked Imams at mosques in France to take measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus.
In a message, CFCM called on Imams to encourage people to avoid shaking hands, to wash their hands frequently, and to only use disposable towels.
The health ministry has also urged people attending Sunday church services to take precautions.
The archbishop of Paris advised parish priests not to administer communion by placing the sacramental bread in worshippers' mouths.
Churches have been asked to empty containers of holy water at the entrance, to avoid people dipping their fingers into contaminated water.
Art lovers were left locked out of the Louvre in Paris on Sunday morning as the world's most-visited museum held a staff meeting about the coronavirus outbreak.
A spokeswoman said the museum in central Paris was expected to open after the meeting between management, personnel and the staff doctor.
She added museums were not covered by government orders to cancel, until further notice, all public gatherings indoors or in confined spaces with more than 5,000 people.
The government issued the orders on Saturday as it tries to contain the spread of the virus. As of Sunday evening, France had 130 confirmed cases of the disease.
