Minister of State for Home Ajay Kumar Mishra met Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday after he returned from his constituency in Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh, where his son has been accused of mowing down a group of protesting farmers on October 3.

Officials close to the junior Home Minister said he was unlikely to resign even though Opposition parties are pressing for his removal.

An official said that Mr. Mishra was not summoned by the Home Minister but he himself sought time for a meeting. The Minister has claimed that his son was not present in the vehicle that mowed down the farmers. He has said that the driver lost balance after stones were thrown at the vehicle, and it hit some of the farmers accidentally. Farmers deny that stones were hurled at the vehicles.

Mr. Mishra attended office at North Block before visiting Mr. Shah at the latter’s residence.

Meanwhile, the Bureau of Police and Research and Development (BPR&D) cancelled the invitation to media persons for an event scheduled for Thursday in which Mr. Mishra is the chief guest.

A BPR&D official said, “The invitation may be treated as cancelled.” The event is related to the two-day 7th national conference of heads of prisons of all States and Union Territories.
