A person has died after being struck by a train at a station in south west London.

An air ambulance was dispatched shortly after 10am on Thursday after emergency services received reports of a person being hit by a train at Mortlake in Richmond upon Thames.

The person, whose age is not currently known, was pronounced dead at the scene, British Transport Police said.

Mortlake station has been closed and services temporarily suspended while police deal with the incident in Sheen Lane.

Pictures taken at the scene show police cars parked beside the station's level crossing, alongside fire engines and ambulances.

An air ambulance landed nearby in Mortlake Green.

A BTP spokesman told the Standard: “Shortly after 10am today, officers were called to Mortlake station, after reports of a person being struck by a train.

"Officers are currently on scene alongside paramedics, however a person has sadly been pronounced dead.

"Work is now being made to identify the person and inform their family.

"This incident is not currently being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

The incident led to all services being halted temporarily between Whitton and Mortlake, South Western Railway said.

“Due to emergency services dealing with an incident between Clapham Junction and Feltham all lines between Whitton and Mortlake are blocked,” a spokesman said.

“Trains from Reading/Windsor will be diverted via Brentford.”
