Mortified mum fails driving test on the spot because of dirty front seat

An angry woman says a driving test instructor failed her - because her seat wasn't clean enough.

Letticia Pevy, 38, claims she received an automatic disqualification because her car was dirty and not because of her driving ability.

The mother-of-five, from New Zealand, is desperate to get her licence so her can ferry around her children.

But she failed her test before she put the keys in the ignition.

She was told the seat of her Mazda was too dirty and deemed coronavirus risk.

But she claimed she had cleaned it before setting off but it did not meet the examiner's strict standards.

The mum says she was left crying in her car for almost an hour.

"It's not immaculate but as a busy working mum of five, our family car is often last priorities," unhappy Letticia told  7news.com.au.

"Had I been informed prior on what their expectation was, obviously I would have gone to greater lengths to get it up to scratch.

"To be told your car is a health and safety hazard, I don't think I've ever been in my adult life so mortified and embarrassed.

"I was a nervous wreck a couple of nights beforehand.

"I actually think I had gone through every single possible scenario - but having a messy vehicle didn't even occur to me."

But she claimed the instructor was not wearing personal protective equipment when she was due to sit her test.

She was initially denied a refund after complaining.

But she will now be allowed to resit the test without charge after the story gained national attention.

"As we continue to move through different COVID-19 alert levels we are following strict health and safety procedures while conducting driver tests," operations support manager James Law told Stuff.
