It's never been easier to quickly transfer money within our friendship groups to pay back everything from takeaways to holidays.
And we've all been guilty of being tempted by the reference box when transferring cash, with the chance to wind up our pals with a cheeky comment.
Many of us have added highly questionable references to payments to give ourselves a laugh, but a mortgage advisor has now warned against it if you're hoping to get on the property ladder anytime soon.
KAG Financial posted a video on TikTok titled: 'How to avoid embarrassment when applying for a mortgage' and it's been viewed nearly half a million times as viewers were sent into a panic about their previous inappropriate references.
The clip says: "Remember the money your transferred your pal? We see it and so does the lender.
"'Money for drugs' is probably not the best thing to use. (This is actually tame compared to what we see).
"Avoid joke references."
When people asked if it could actually harm their chances of securing a mortgage, the company responded to say: "For those of you asking how far they check back - most of the time it's three months, your application is also only affected if it's something illegal."
Those who were worried about transferring money with references including 'SUGAR DADDY' and 'Wifey Dollaaaa' were relieved to learn it wouldn't become a roadblock in their property search.
But if you're considering applying for a mortgage in the future, it's probably best to cut out any references to illegal activity or the firm warns you might have some awkward explaining to do during the process, and said it could even cause genuine issues.
The good news is mortgage advisors and lenders usually only look at statements from about three to six months previously, which means there's still time to flush out the bad ones.
Some took the advice one board, as one commented to say: "Jesus, some of mine are horrific."
Another added: "And this is why I will never ever ever get a mortgage."
