Morten Andersen becomes an American citizen

One of the greatest kickers in the history of football is now an American citizen.

Michigan State Spartan legend Morten Andersen became a naturalized citizen of the United States yesterday. He announced the news on Twitter.

Anderesen, nicknamed “The Great Dane”, was born in Denmark and is a Danish citizen. Andersen arrived in America as a foreign exchange student in high school and that’s when he first played American football, eventually earning a scholarship to kick at Michigan State.

Andersen and his booming left leg were in East Lansing from 1978-1982. He was an All-American in 1981 and kicked a Big Ten record 63-yard field goal that season.

Andersen, along with being in the Pro Football and Michigan State Halls of Fame, was elected to the college football Hall of Fame this season. He is the all-time leader in games played in the NFL with 382 and when he retired was the NFL’s all-time leading scorer. He was passed up by Adam Vinatieri last season.
