Mortar attack on Somali newspaper

The printing press at the only independent daily newspaper in Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, has been damaged in a mortar attack on its offices.

None of Xog-Ogaal's staff were injured in the bombardment, but several computers were ruined.

Omar Faruk Osman, secretary general of the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) said the damage was so bad that the paper "can hardly continue to publish."

No-one has admitted responsibility for the attack.

In a separate incident, two Somali journalists who work for privately-owned news websites have been arrested.

Police said they were interrogating Jabir Ali Omar and Dahir Ahmed Jirde for reporting the fact that leaflets critical of the Somaliland administration were being distributed.
