Can you judge a book by its cover? If so, and you’re of a particularly literal mindset, then Morrissey is about to drop a debut novel about relay racing. That’s the sole image on the sleeve of his debut novel, which is out 24 September through Penguin.
The runner in question is Earl Young, an athlete from Abilene Christian College in Texas who was part of the US team that won gold in the 1960 Rome olympics, setting a new world record time of 3.02.2 in the process. On the sleeve, with his pained expression, he doesn’t look dissimilar to Morrissey himself.
Beyond that we know precious little, although the man himself has this to say of his book: “Beware of the novelist … intimate and indiscreet … pompous, prophetic airs … here is the fact of the fiction … an American tale where, naturally, evil conquers good, and none live happily ever after, for the complicated pangs of the empty experiences of flesh-and-blood human figures are the reasons why nothing can ever be enough. To read a book is to let a root sink down. List of the lost is the reality of what is true battling against what is permitted to be true”.
The real question is whether or not you could design a different, dare we say more informative, cover? You certainly gave it a good go when we asked you to design a sleeve for his autobiography and you came up with these sterling efforts.
