Morrissey fans from across the world descend on Manchester

Yards from where Morrissey was due to play two huge homecoming shows at Castlefield Bowl last summer, his dedicated fans ended a weekend of events celebrating everything Moz with a good old fashioned sing song.

Hundreds of fans from around the world descended on the former Smiths frontman's home city to see the sights which inspired the music, and continue to soundtrack their lives.

After two nights of events at another Mancunian institution, the Star and Garter on Fairfield Street, a few dozen hardy fans braved the unseasonably cold weather for a picnic and accompanying Smiths singsong, treating the M.E.N. to a rendition of There Is A Light That Never Goes Out.

Visitors to the Moz Army meet came from Los Angeles, Berlin, Scotland, Germany, Holland, and Rochdale.

Despite that geographic diversity, the thing that connects all of them is a love for all things Morrissey.

On Friday night they enjoyed the famous monthly Smiths Disco at the Star and Garter, returning to the Grade II listed pub on Saturday for a performance from tribute band These Smiths, and a Morrissey karaoke.

They also managed to fit in a bus tour visiting the Morrissey landmarks including Strangeways prison, Salford Lads Club, his former home in Stretford and Southern Cemetery.

Three pilgrims who travelled thousands of miles from their homes in Los Angeles to visit Manchester for the event were Angie Reyes, 36, Marilyn Marquez, 31, and Sachelly Ramos, 28.

Having watched Morrissey in concert countless times, they felt they had to come to Manchester to see where the inspiration behind tracks such as Rusholme Ruffians and albums named Strangeways Here We Come.

Sachelly, who has been to Manchester once before, said: "I first came in 2016, it was just beautiful. Everything felt so romantic to see it in person.

"I went home and told everybody they needed to come."

Angie said: "Just to see the streets he ran, where he formed The Smiths, I have been waiting for this trip for a long time."

Morrissey, who is currently performing a residency in New York's Broadway, has been criticised recently due to controversial comments on a number of different subjects.

But Marilyn said she can separate these from the music she loves.

She said: "He made some comments about sexual abuse that really rubbed me the wrong way. But he is entitled to his opinion.

She said: "Moz Army started on social media, when everyone around the world would connect. And after two years everybody said can we have a meet."
