Morrisons worker helps mum give birth in toilets after hearing 'screaming'

A Morrisons staff member sprung into action and helped deliver a baby after hearing the mother "screaming" for help in the toilets.

The employee at the supermarket branch in Wishaw, North Lanarkshire, Scotland is said to have rushed to the woman's aid after hearing her pleas for help on Tuesday.

She then helped deliver the customer's baby, the Daily Record reports.

The new mum was taken to Wishaw General Hospital by ambulance after the unusual birth around 5pm.

One shopper told how the staff member had rushed to the expectant mum's aid - and called for them to be rewarded.

Lorraine Jordan said: "I got there once all the excitement had ended but I saw the woman being taken into the ambulance.

"Then a staff member at the cold meat counter told us what had happened.

"It was a member of staff that delivered the baby. I was told she heard someone screaming for help and it was coming from the toilets.

"It would be lovely for the member of staff to be awarded in some way."

Morrisons Wishaw store manager, Nicky Sutherland, praised his team.

He said: "I'm incredibly proud of my team, who acted fast to support a customer who welcomed a little baby into the world in our store yesterday afternoon.

"We hope that both mum and baby are doing well and send our full congratulations."

The Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed they were called to attend the supermarket on Tuesday and said two patients were transported to hospital.

"Two ambulances were sent to the scene and two patients were transported to University Wishaw Hospital.”

Lesia Husar, 41, gave birth to baby Richard on Sunday, June 12, in Nottingham having travelled over 1,200 miles from her home of Chernivsti, Ukraine, to escape the "daily fear of bombings".

Baby Richard was born on Saturday, June 12, weighing 4.5 pounds.

The hospital staff, who Lesia says were very helpful, set up a moving WhatsApp call with her husband Taras, who was on duty in Ukraine at the time.

After first heading to Romania, a pregnant Lesia, along with her 14-year-old daughter Renatta, flew to the UK where she was welcomed by a host family in Woodthorpe.

She was moved to see that the family had stacked her room with supplies in anticipation for the arrival of her baby.

This included a pram, cot and clothes for baby Richard.
