Morrisons to help food banks and community groups with Christmas 'giving tree'

Christmas is the season for giving and Morrisons has provided customers with a new way to help those in need this year with a Christmas 'giving tree.'

The Christmas tree initiative will be installed in every one of the supermarkets Scottish branches until Christmas Eve, and customers will be able to pick up a bauble worth £1, £2 or £5 to donate to a local food bank or community group nominated by their store.

From today, all 498 stores across Scotland the UK will be putting up an early Christmas tree with the aim of raising over half a million pounds for a variety of food banks and local communities throughout November and December.

Customers will be able to donate by picking up one of the baubles in their nearest store, which can be added to their shopping at the checkout.

Each bauble comes with a unique barcode and the cost will be added to the customers bill.

The supermarket understands that the festive period is typically a difficult period for many families in the UK, so, they have installed the new tree as a way to make things easier.

Since the start of the pandemic, Morrisons has worked closely with food banks and communities across the UK and donated more than £12 million pounds to groups across the UK.

The supermarket will also continue to offer their popular food bank ‘Pick Up Packs’ in stores throughout the festive period as well as bringing back its Gift Donation Stations where customers can donate new gifts.

Rebecca Singleton, Community Director at Morrisons, said: “Christmas can be a challenging time and food banks are a lifeline for many people in the UK.

We want to make it easier for our customers to donate in whatever way they can to help those in their local community get the items they need. The Giving Tree will give customers a unique and festive way to support local food banks and community groups.”

Morrisons Christmas Giving Tree initiative is part of Morrisons drive to stock Britain’s food banks and continue feeding the nation and will feature in all 498 Morrisons stores until the 24th December.

The new initiative comes after the supermarket pledged another £5 million to support foodbanks throughout the pandemic in February this year, following a £10 million pound donation the year prior.

Since last year, the British supermarket has been urging people to support their local foodbanks and make sure that they are stocked with enough to help families in need during difficult times.
