Morrisons to face more equal pay claims from staff

Morrisons is facing further equal pay claims from current and former workers who say they have been paid less than colleagues doing similar jobs.

Law firm Roscoe Reid is taking cases to court and employment tribunals on behalf of Morrisons staff, with claims covering pay, bonuses, holidays and sick leave.

Ellie Pinnells, of Roscoe Reid, said: "There is a clear case that female roles have been underpaid for a long time and employees are very likely to win their equal pay cases."

The latest round of claims comes after a similar action was launched by law firm Leigh Day which could leave Morrisons facing a £1bn bill.

Leigh Day has begun similar proceedings Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury's which could result in billions of pounds of payouts.

Asda recently lost the latest round of a long-running legal battle with its staff over equal pay.

The retail giant challenged an Employment Appeal Tribunal decision that jobs in Asda stores are comparable with those in the firm's distribution centres.

The Court of Appeal dismissed Asda's appeal and ruled in favour of thousands of retail workers, mostly women, who argue they should be paid the same as those working in the supermarket's depots.

Asda said it plans to appeal against the ruling at the Supreme Court.
