Morrisons to extend opening hours from today to shorten queues amid coronavirus pandemic

From today Morrisons stores are staying open longer as supermarkets do their best to return to normal service.

That will mean most branches stay open until 10pm again on weekdays and Saturdays, and 9:30 to 4pm on Sundays.

"As the evenings get lighter and the stock levels on our shelves has improved, to ease congestion and make it easier to shop, from next week we will open our stores for longer," Morrisons said in a update on Facebook.

"From Monday 20th April, the majority of our stores will be open from 7am - 10pm on Monday to Saturday, and 9.30am - 4pm on Sunday.

"Scottish stores are open 8am - 8pm on Sunday. For NHS workers, we will continue to have dedicated shopping times and these will be 6am - 7am on Monday to Saturday and 9am - 9.30am on Sunday. In Scottish stores, it will be 7am - 8am on Sunday."

The move has gone down well with most customers on social media.

Steve Bullows replied: "Well done Morrison’s - doing a great job looking after us customers, extremely difficult times, your staff are awesome."

Elton Borge addded: "Best service I have received in all Supermarkets - Great Staff, Great Products and a Smile. Well done and Thank You."

But not everyone was convinced it was time for things to go back to normal.

Gina Stewart wrote: "This is silly as the pandemic is not over why are the hours changing, should still be the same & close on a sunday & let all the have staff a break!"

Lesley Watt added: "Crazy idea... We're still in lockdown. Only encouraging folk to go out if open later. Now opening an hour longer each day than before lockdown."

But things aren't entirely back to normal yet, with Morrisons asking shoppers to keep a two-metre distance in store and operating a one in, one out, policy to make sure there is enough space inside to shop safely.
