Morrisons supermarket plans to demolish former Fishponds pub The Farriers Arms

A supermarket giant wants to demolish a disused pub in Bristol and create a "public realm" in its place.

Morrisons has submitted a planning application to knock down the Farriers Arms building in Fishponds Road, located next to its existing store, and develop an "attractive" green space on the plot of land.

The building formerly home to the Farriers Arms has been vacant for 10 years.

In plans submitted to Bristol City Council, planning consultants Peacock and Smith - working on behalf of Morrisons - said land on the corner of Fishponds Road and Hockey's Lane is in need of regeneration.

"The former Farriers Arms has not traded as a public house for in excess of 10 years and is now in a poor condition and detracts from the character and appearance of the area having been subject to repeated instances of vandalism, break-ins and anti-social behaviour," said the firm.

"The demolition of the building will enable a high-quality public realm to be created."

If approved by the council the area would include seating areas, plants and steps leading up to the store.

Landscape architects Barry Chinn Associates said the project would "enhance the amenity value of the site and provide an attractive and welcoming approach to the store," and "enhance the street scene and improve pedestrian access".

The Farriers Arms opened in 1872, making it Fishponds' oldest pub, before closing in October 2010 to the dismay of locals.

It was bought soon after its closure by Morrisons, which put in a planning application to demolish the building and replace it with an extension of its current store.

But after opposition from locals and CAMRA (the Campaign For Real Ale), the chain withdrew its application and the site has lay vacant since.

Morrisons' latest plan has received five letters of support and two letters of objection since being submitted on September 9.

One person who objected said "there is very limited local history left in Fishponds and this should be saved," while another opposer added "Morrisons should pay for the building to be refurbished so a new landlord can take on the pub".

It is not yet known when a decision will be made on the plan.
