Morrisons shoppers can now use their own containers to take home meat and fish

Morrisons shoppers can now bring their own reusable container to fill up on items from the butcher, fishmonger or deli counters.

The supermarket chain generally hands out items from these counters in single-use plastic bags, but it is now seeking to cut back on their use.

Staff at the counters can fill up the containers with the item of your choosing. The containers are then weighed prior to customers heading to the check out.

Shoppers at Morrisons stores across Scotland will be able to take advantage of the new scheme.

Morrisons alerted customers to the new scheme over Facebook last week.

They said: “You can now bring your own reusable containers to our counters including our butchers, fishmongers and deli, where out colleagues will happily fill them for you.

“Simply hand over your container to be weighed.”

The firm recently pledged to become the first supermarket to be completely supplied by ‘net zero’ carbon British farms by 2030.

Morrisons said that it will work with 3,000 farmers and growers to produce affordable net zero carbon meat, fruit and vegetables.

Bosses expect that the first products to reach net zero carbon status will be eggs as early as 2022. This will then be followed by lamb, fruit, vegetables, pork and beef in the years to come.

David Potts, Chief Executive of Morrisons, said: “Climate change is one of the biggest challenges for our generation and growing food is a key contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.

“As British farming’s biggest supermarket customer, we’re in a unique position to guide our farms and help lead changes in environmental practices.

“It’s tears ahead of industry expectations - and an ambitious target - but it’s our duty to do it.”
