Morrisons shares plans for supermarkets with no staff

Supermarket giant Morrisons has shared plans to ditch staff entirely from one of its stores.

New plans have revealed customers will be required to download an app via their smartphone which will need to be scanned upon entrance. Shoppers will then choose their items from the shelves and place them in bags without the need to scan anything at the tills.

Payment will be taken through the app once cameras have detected the chosen items.

The idea has been tested at the firm's head office in Bradford, reports the ECHO.

If the store gets the green light it is expected to open later this year.

Tesco has also revealed plans for a similar project.

The plans come after a study by 'scan and go' app maker Ubamarket, found more than 40% of Britons now want a more contactless shopping experience following the pandemic.

Ubermarket CEO Will Broome said: “The research clearly shows that the Coronavirus pandemic has completely transformed both retailer and consumer behaviour- in particular when it comes to purchasing their goods.

“The pandemic has raised huge questions around hygiene and safety, with particular concerns around consumer confidence.

“Ultimately, if retailers are willing to implement retail technology, we could make the weekly shop far more safe and hygienic for everybody in the UK.”
