A fast check-in and check-out initiative is launching in Morrisons' stores, enabling customers who want only a small shop to bypass queues of trolleys.
The new 'Speedy Shopping' option gets under way in the supermarket chain from May 13 to cater for those needing only a basket-load of items and it means that these customers can use a separate 'lane' to avoid the trolley queues outside its stores and then a quicker check-out once they've got what they need inside.
The idea is to get them in and out of the stores far faster.
In explaining the new system, a spokesman said that the company has introduced a separate Speedy Shopping lane outside its stores and that from this lane three customers for every one trolley shopper will be invited inside.
And 'marshals' will be on hand to help guide customers as they choose from either a shopping basket at the entrance or a shopping trolley - and more marshals will be in place inside the store to help basket shoppers once they have bought what they want.
They then will be able to use a new Speedy Shopper checkout and there will be both staffed and self-scan options.
And to speed up the payment process, more self-scan tills have been turned into card-only ones.
David Potts, chief executive of Morrisons, said: “It’s fair that customers doing smaller shopping trips should queue for less time too.
"Speedy Shopping will ensure that Morrisons' stores will be more convenient for customers wanting a small basket of items."
