Morrisons launch grocery parcels for customers to buy for local food banks

The coronavirus crisis has left a huge number of families and individuals in difficult circumstances, with many having to turn to food banks.

Now, Morrisons has launched pre-packed food parcels that can be purchased and then donated at the till, making it easier for customers to help those in need.

The ‘Pick Up Packs’ are priced between £1 and £3 and are filled with a mixture of products that have been requested by local food banks based on their needs.

They are made up of long life pantry foods, such as rice, pasta, cereals and tinned foods.

You can purchase and donate the parcels at the checkout (PA)

Shoppers can simply pay for a parcel at the checkout and then ask for it to be taken to the food bank, so helping out during these hard times couldn't be easier.

The idea came from Morrisons colleague Michelle Leary from Basingstoke, who noticed that customers were finding it hard to decide what to donate to food banks.

It was trialled in a number of Morrisons branches with successful results, and will now be rolled out to all stores across the UK.

Rebecca Singleton, Community Director at Morrisons said: “The UK’s food banks are a lifeline for the most vulnerable in our communities and these parcels are an easy way to donate to them. At Morrisons, we want to play our full part in feeding the nation and ensure nobody gets left behind.”

The supermarket chain has also partnered up with the Trussell Trust, the organisation working to stop hunger in the UK, to release an online donating mechanism, with the goods going directly to the charity.

Customers can purchase a £10 voucher on the Food Boxes section of the company’s website, and these will then be sent to a local food bank of their choice.

Morrisons is also donating £10million of its own money to food banks up and down the country.

To find your nearest Morrisons, you can use the online store finder tool.

The chain recently launched a luxury dine in deal for two for £12 - perfect for nights in.

The offer includes two main meals, two sides, a dessert and a bottle of wine, saving shoppers £10 in total.
