Morrisons announcement that shoppers can use reusable containers for loose items purchased from its fresh food counters has caused controversy.
Cutting waste has taken a hit during the pandemic with coffee shops suspending the use of reusable cups.
So you'd think any decisions to allow reusable containers would be welcomed.
However, Morrrisons received a mixed response when it announced that shoppers can now bring their own containers to fill up with items at fresh food counters, the Manchester Evening News reports.
Posting on Facebook, Morrisons wrote: "You can now bring your own reusable containers to our counters including our butchers, fishmongers and deli, where our colleagues will happily fill them for you. Simply hand over your container to be weighed. #ReduceReuseRecycle."
The post quickly racked up shopper support, and has since been liked over 1,700 times, and shared over 700 times.
Writing under the post, one shopper said: "What a great idea. Simple measures to help the planet. I'll be doing this asap. (In terms of the pandemic, I am an adult, so I know how to wash containers and my hands)."
"I think its a brilliant idea. Well done Morrisons," a second praised.
Somebody else wrote: "What a great idea, a positive move."
But as per usual, some people weren't content, and took the post as an excuse to complain about potential hygiene risks.
"Great idea, but a NO NO during a pandemic," said one person.
Another wrote: "Touching up the meat after touching up containers from people isn’t the one in a pandemic ... good idea but not at the moment really."
"Totally unhygienic given what's going on in the world some people are not clean so although I get the plastic and paper waste don't think it's good people bringing stuff in from home," complained somebody else.
If you like the idea, do it. If you don't like it, don't take your own tub.
It's really that simple.
