Morrisons handing out free sanitary products to struggling families who 'ask for Sandy'

Morrisons has been applauded for giving out free period products to struggling customers.

In an image put up in one of its stores, a notice explains how shoppers can discreetly ask staff for sanitary items.

At this particular branch, it involves going to the customer service desk and asking for a package that “Sandy” left you.

Staff will then hand you an envelope with a sanitary product inside.

The note, which is circulating on social media, said: "Please don't feel shy. If you are in need or struggling for sanitary products go to our customer service kiosk (Next to Timpsons) and ask for a package that SANDY has left for you.

"You will then be given a FREE discreet envelope with what you need no questions asked."

Shoppers are being told to check their local store to see if it is running the ask "Sandy" initiative (PA)

It also used the hashtags “Let's End Period Poverty” and “We Love To Help”.

Customers have been quick to heap praise on Morrisons for the kind gesture.

One person said: “Yes, Morrisons. Excellent work here.”

Another said: “Brilliant work from some of Morrisons' stores to help combat period poverty discreetly.”

A third tweeted: “Morrisons you deserve praise for this.”

Morrisons confirmed to the Mirror that this is not a nationwide initiative but said it could look to expand it in the future.

At the moment, it advises shoppers to check their local branch to see if they are running it.

It is unclear how many shops are taking part in the movement.

Meanwhile, Lidl has announced it will offer free tampons across its Irish stores to help combat period poverty.
