Morrisons cuts fuel prices with unleaded now 99.7p per litre

Morrisons has reduced the price of its petrol with unleaded now sold for under £1 per litre for the first time in more than four years.

The supermarket said it will charge a maximum of 99.7p per litre at UK forecourts from Monday. Morrisons says this is the first time fuel has been "sold nationally" for less than £1 per litre since February 2016. The retailer has also cut the price of diesel to no more than 104.7p per litre.

Morrisons' head of fuel Ashley Myers said: "This cut will help people who are travelling to work, those shopping for essentials, and those assisting the elderly and vulnerable.

"We want to play our full part in reducing the cost of living and feeding the nation at this difficult time."

Morrisons' rivals will likely follow with their own fuel cuts, as when one supermarket drops prices, others are not far behind. Last month, Asda cut its pump prices to 102p per litre for unleaded.

Petrol prices have slumped since March, as demand has fallen due to motorists staying at home during the coronavirus pandemic, while oil producers Saudi Arabia and Russia failed to agree a deal to limit production and protect higher prices.

In a Tweet, Morisons says it is cutting pump prices as a 'thank you' to key workers and motorist.

"To say thank you to all key workers and other motorists making essential journeys, we're cutting the price of unleaded to 99.7p per litre and diesel to 104.7p per litre from tomorrow morning," Morrisons said.
