Morrisons customer outrage as supermarket starts charging 30p for plastic bags

Morrisons looks set to up the price of plastic carrier bags to to 30p each across the country.

It would be the third hike in price this year alone, with plastic bags going up from 10p to 15p in January and then rising again to 20p in April.

The 30p tag is currently just a trial at a few stores, but the supermarket plans to roll it out across the country if it proves a success, the Sun reports .

But the increased price isn't going down well with some customers.

"I’ve just spent 30p on a carrier bag in Morrisons and I am shocked and upset," Abbie Colclough tweeted .

Kristian Hicks felt the same, tweeting : "30p for a carrier bag Morrisons really??? What’s next, a rental charge for the shopping trolley?"

Another customer felt the charge was forcing people into using paper bags.

"30p for a carrier bag? You having a laugh? But hold on I can have a paper one for 25p??" he tweeted .

"Seriously, at least Dick Turpin had the decency to wear a mask."

The paper bags are made in Wales using sustainably managed forests and are strong enough to carry up to 16kg of shopping.

The move comes as the supermarket looks to make a permanent switch to paper bags in an attempt to cut down on single-use plastic.

Morrisons chief executive David Potts said: "Our customers tell us that plastic reduction is their most important environmental concern.

"So in a company-wide effort for the last 18 months we've been working aisle by aisle to take out unnecessary plastic wherever possible."

Morrisons has been voted the most environmentally responsible company in the UK at the Responsible Business Awards for its work on plastics reduction.
