Morrisons brings in ban for products across all UK stores

Supermarket Morrisons has confirmed it will ban plastic packaging from bananas that are sold in store.

The store - one of the so called Big Six in England - confirmed the news to the media this week as part of a crackdown on single-use plastic.

On Tuesday September 21, it was confirmed the measure across all Morrisons stores would be the first of its kind in a UK retailer.

It is unclear whether Morrisons' rivals - from Britain's biggest grocer Tesco, to the second largest chain Sainsbury's - follow, Birmingham Live reports.

Morrisons has other rivals in the form of budget favourites Lidl and Aldi, as well as more traditional rival Asda, which was sold off in a huge deal earlier this year.

The retailer, based in Yorkshire, said 45 million single-use plastic carrier bags will be taken out of circulation through the gesture.

Elio Biondo, banana buyer for Morrisons, said: "Bananas have their own packaging - their skins.

"They also grow in bunches which generally means they don't need bagging together, so a simple sturdy paper band is the ideal alternative.

"In trials the quality of the bananas has remained the same, so this switch out of plastic is a no-brainer."

Instead of plastic packaging, there will instead be paper bands keeping bananas held together in fruit and veg aisles across the country.

The move from Morrisons comes following a successful trial, it confirmed.
