Morrisons are now feeding donkeys in Leeds to avoid throwing food away

Morrison's may well have become the shop of choice for donkeys living at the Donkey Sanctuary in Leeds, after one local store donated a mountain of carrots to the charity.

Last week, the supermarket in Yeadon decided that, instead of throwing away produce nearing it's sell-by, they'd put it to good use.

A whopping 17 trays of fresh carrots were then picked up by staff at the charity's Leeds centre in Eccup, and taken back to feed the 21 resident donkeys.

The gentle equines deliver 'donkey assisted therapy' for vulnerable children and adults throughout the community.

But, as the centre is currently closed to the public, a reduced number of staff are busy working round-the-clock to make sure the donkeys receive the absolute highest level of care.

They were so pleased to receive the generous donation from Morrisons, which they say will provide a "special treat" as well as being used for enrichment activities such as burying a carrot in straw, to encourage the donkeys' "instinctive foraging behaviour."

Cathryn Hampshire, centre manager at The Donkey Sanctuary, Leeds said: "Like all charities, we are facing many challenges at the moment, but to know businesses like Morrisons are thinking and supporting others and our donkeys at this difficult time is hugely appreciated.

"We are so grateful for all the support we are receiving from local businesses, staff, volunteers and supporters alike."
