Morrisons announces six changes to every single supermarket in the UK

Supermarket giant Morrisons is making six big changes to its stores in the coming years, it has been revealed.

The supermarket chain will commit to being the first UK retailer to be supplied wholly by net-zero carbon farms.

Net-zero eggs, meat and vegetables are hitting shelves over the next few years - with a goal date of 2025.

The first to hit shelves will be zero emission eggs by 2022, with lamb, fruit, vegetables, pork and beef following, reports BirminghamLive.

Net-zero farms will use things like renewable energy, and reduce the use of fertiliser, as well as rearing different animal breeds, plant trees and eradicate the use of any environmentally -damaging feed.

The National Farmers’ Union (NFU) has led the praise for Morrisons over the move.

David Potts, chief executive of Morrisons, said: “Climate change is one of the biggest challenges for our generation and growing food is a key contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.

“As British farming’s biggest supermarket customer, we’re in a unique position to guide our farms and help lead changes in environmental practices.”

He added it was “an ambitious target – but it’s our duty to do it”.

Environment Secretary George Eustice has also pledged his support for the changes at Morrisons.

Mr Eustice's words come as the UK Government has pledged to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
