Morrisons and Asda have reduced their fuel prices by 12p per litre for petrol and 8p per litre for diesel.
Morrisons described the move as "the biggest fuel price reduction in recent times".
While Asda said drivers will now pay no more than 102p-a-litre on unleaded and 108.7p-a-litre on diesel when filling up at the pump.
And these huge price cuts from two of the nation’s leading supermarkets may not be the last motorists will see.
Oil prices have plunged over the past few weeks since Covid-19 took hold across Europe with the latest Government figures showing that the average price for a litre of fuel at UK forecourts on March 16 was 120.3p for petrol and 124.4p for diesel.
They were also heavily dented when Saudi Arabia, which produces around 10 per cent of the world's oil, decided to slash prices and ramp up production in a trade war with Russia.
The price of a barrel of Brent crude oil, the most used measure, has fallen by around 60 per cent since the beginning of the year.
Luke Bosdet, the AA’s fuel price spokesman, told the Mirror Online : “Clearly, pump prices should be falling faster than they are at the moment.
“£1 a litre beckons, with wholesale petrol prices crashing 8p a litre by the middle of last week and another 7p since then.
"Add VAT to that 15p change and it becomes 18p. That would take the current average pump price of petrol to around 103p a litre and, with supermarkets trading below the average, that £1 a litre should appear again.”
