Morrisons adding 100,000 more food delivery boxes a week to help lockdown Brits

Morrisons is to ramp up the production of its food delivery boxes from next week to help support vulnerable and self-isolating customers.

The grocer, which started producing 10,000 food boxes a fortnight ago, said its output will now jump to 100,000 a week.

The boxes are delivered to customers' doors by DPD and are priced from £30, with delivery costs an extra £5 on top.

It includes an 'essentials box' which contains everything from loo roll to cheese, pasta and canned foods.

Morrisons is also launching two new food box varieties - one containing ready meals and another for those who want to bulk-buy meat.

The new Market Kitchen Meal Box will be priced at £30 including delivery - and will contain eight pre-made dishes.

Customers can also choose from a new Square Meals box which will include recipes such as deluxe Shepherd’s Pie or Cauliflower Mac Cheese or the Meal Makers box where you can add your own sides to dishes like Chicken Tikka Masala or Kerala Vegetable Curry.

The Morrisons British Meat Box will be filled with enough meat for more than 38 meals and will cost £45 including delivery.

It contains a 5.7kg selection of fresh meat and includes; a gammon joint, a beef roasting Joint, a pack of chicken fillets, four Best Scotch beef burgers, 25 meatballs, 10 sausages, a pack of 12% fat beef mince, a pack of pork loin steaks, two sirloin steaks and a sachet of fresh peppercorn sauce.

Morrisons Chief Executive, David Potts said: "These food boxes are a lifeline for many customers at this very difficult time and are providing essential food to people that either cannot leave their home or struggle to reach the supermarket.  They are one of the ways we are playing our full part in feeding the nation."

The food boxes are particularly suitable for vulnerable customers and key workers working tirelessly in the fight against Coronavirus.

Morrisons has also started delivering them to local hospitals, care homes and sheltered accommodation for NHS and care workers.

Over the past week, Marks & Spencer has also joined the food box bandwagon with its own hamper filled with items such as toilet roll, tea, coffee, rice, pasta as well as tins of soup and baked beans.

The upmarket retailer's initiative costs £35 online, plus £3.99 for home delivery via courier.

Shoppers can order online and choose between a meat-eaters or vegetarian box.

Unlike Morrisons' food delivery box, M&S tells its customers the exact contents of each box beforehand - here's what's included.
