As the time of year to raise a glass approached, prosecco lovers might be pleased to hear that the best bottle costs just £7.

A panel of experts put together by Good Housekeeping magazine voted Morrisons’ Spumante prosecco as the best sparkling wine available at all major UK supermarkets.

The product received an 81/100 rating and was praised for its fruity flavours and “large lively bubbles”.

Clive Donaldson, Morrisons wine expert, said: "We are delighted our prosecco has been recognised as the top supermarket sparkling wine for this Christmas by Good Housekeeping.”

It was topped only by Laborie Méthode Cap Classique Blanc de Blancs Brut 2010, which received 82 points and is available from Amazon.

The winning wine was described by Good Housekeeping as “an indulgent, buttery baked apple aroma with lots of fresh, ripe red apple."

It added: “The palate is full of buttery brioche apple and ripe lemon. Lively, velvety bubbles with a smooth and easy drinking finish. Perfect with canapés.”

Prosecco has soared in popularity in recent years, with many people favouring it over champagne for its lighter flavour and more affordable price point.
