Morpeth Town manager Nicky Gray on NPL decision to suspend fixtures

Morpeth Town manager Nicky Gray has insisted that the club must “stayed focused and motivated” as they await news on when their season will resume.

The Highwaymen have enjoyed an impressive first season in the BetVictor NPL Premier Division and they currently sit just five points and four places from the play-off positions.

Last week’s 2-1 home win against Hyde United saw Gray’s side extend their unbeaten run to ten games in all competitions and they also hold as many as seven games in hand of the clubs currently occupying the top five places.

However, their aspirations of securing a third promotion in as many seasons have been put on hold by the Northern Premier League’s decision to suspend all fixtures “until further notice”.

The league released a lengthy statement on Monday evening confirming their decision and they stated that they were assessing a number of options as they look to find a suitable way forward.

Gray admitted the decision was “disappointing” but he is keen to ensure that his players and the club as a whole are ready to resume action if the go-ahead is given.

The Highwaymen boss told the club website: “People’s health and welfare is obviously the priority, so I appreciate we have to accept what the measures are.

“It’s disappointing that we don’t know when we will play again or if the season will actually be finished now. But all we can do is train and prepare and try to stay focused and motivated.”
