Morocco will soon start the production of 5 million doses a month of China's Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine, state news agency MAP reported on Monday.
The announcement was made at a ceremony chaired by King Mohammed VI during which the Moroccan government, Sinopharm and Sothema, whose formal name is Société Thérapeutique Marocaine, signed a deal to produce the vaccine in Morocco.
At the same event, the Moroccan government also signed a deal with Sweden’s Recipharm to set up a plant in Morocco to produce other key vaccines.
Around 9.1 million of Morocco's 36 million population have received two doses of coronavirus jabs since the vaccination campaign was launched in January. The country is using the Sinopharm and AstraZeneca vaccines.
Morocco has registered more than 534,000 coronavirus infections, including 9,329 deaths.
