Morocco’s Tanger-Med port has improved its international ranking becoming the 35th container port in the world, from its former 46th standing, according to Lloyd’s Listing and Container Management that rank the top 120 ports in the world out of 500 in cargo activity.

Tanger-Med has become the top container transshipment port in the Mediterranean and has confirmed its leadership for the third consecutive year as the leading cargo port in Africa.

Last year, the Moroccan port handled 4.8 million containers, making the best progress in the top 50 with a growth of + 38 percent.

In Africa, Tanger-Med is followed by Port Said in Egypt in 45th place (3.86 million containers), Durban in South Africa is 71st (2.76 million containers), Alexandria in Egypt is 90th (1.81 million containers), Lomé in Togo is 99th (1.5 million containers), Mombasa in Kenya is 106th (1.41 million containers), and Lagos in Nigeria is 115th (1.30 million containers).

Globally, Tanger-Med outperformed the ports of the Panama Canal, Seattle and Savannah (US), Felixstowe (UK), Santos (Brazil), Mundra (India) and Vancouver (Canada).

This outcome indicates the growing interest of major global maritime operators in Tanger-Med as a major logistics platform. It also demonstrates the strong synergy among concessionaires, liners, administrations and the port authority, who jointly work daily to optimize vessel calls and provide ships with international standards.

Lloyd’s List and Container Management are international ranking references specialized for more than a decade in publishing and preparing annual rankings of world ports.
