Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, Waters and Forests Aziz Akhannouch said Morocco’s agricultural exports have had revenues worth 17.5 billion dirhams (about $1.75 billion).
In his address to the parliament, the Minister said crop growing is in full pace to achieve self-sufficiency and increase exports.
Exports in agricultural products by May 24 have risen nine percent, reaching 1.1 million tons, he noted.
Akhannouch pointed out that 525,000 tons of tomatoes were exported in an increase of five percent compared to 2019, while the exports of citrus products did not exceed 482,000 tons, registering a 27 percent drop.
He also stressed that exporting vegetables and fruits has seen a major improvement.
A total of 350 million dirhams ($35 million) has been spent on farmers affected by drought during the current agricultural season.
The “exceptional” financial assistance came after an assessment on the effects of drought on agriculture in cooperation with the Moroccan Agricultural Insurance Company (MAMDA), he explained.
The compensation was made in mid-April instead of July in order to alleviate the farmers’ losses.
