Morocco is working on accelerating the coronavirus vaccination campaign to achieve herd immunity within the coming weeks. The aim is to vaccinate 80 percent of the population, Health Minister Khalid Ait Taleb said.

Speaking to MPs, he noted that Morocco has 16 million vaccine doses available.

Morocco only needs six million more individuals to get vaccinated to reach the desired herd immunity, according to Taleb.

He added that by Oct. 17, more than 44.8 million doses were used.

So far, Morocco has administered first jabs to 23.6 million people or 64 percent of the population while 21.4 million people have received two doses.

Some regions in the Kingdom are heading towards achieving herd immunity as a result of a vaccination rate, such as Béni Mellal-Khenifra, where more than 95 percent of the target groups were fully inoculated.

Taleb said the vaccine pass was the most appropriate measure to protect public health and prevent the loss in lives and economic damage that may result from another wave of the pandemic.

He further added that a new strategy was adopted in which the vaccination campaign will be expanded to cover undocumented migrants, other vulnerable groups, and abandoned children.

This strategy also focuses on organizing field campaigns to raise awareness on the importance of getting vaccinated.
