Morocco’s Ministry of Health has opened an investigation into the death of a 33-year-old woman in Marrakech on Monday soon after she had received a dose of the Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine.

Her family said that she had not suffered from any health problem and had signed up to receive the vaccine in Marrakech. She died right after she received the shot. A colleague of hers also fainted after receiving it.

The ministry added that it had immediately opened an investigation into the incident, dispatching a commission to Marrakech.

Morocco had received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine through the Covax program and kicked off inoculations in Casablanca, Marrakech and Agadir on Sunday. Over 5,000 people have taken the shot.

The national pharmacovigilance system said that since the beginning of the vaccination drive, it has been very vigilant in monitoring any side-effects or health incidents related to the shots.

It pledged to release the results of the investigation as soon as the commission completes its work.

Some 12 million people have already received the first dose of the vaccine in Morocco, while 10 million have received the second. China’s Sinopharm and Britain’s AstraZeneca are the most common shots.
