The Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS) re-elected its secretary-general Nabil Benabdallah for a third term at the conclusion of its tenth conference in the resort of Bouznika, south of Rabat.
The members of the Central Committee had to decide during the conference on who would be a new Secretary-General, namely Benabdallah or his rival Said Fakak.
Benabdallah gained 371 votes while Fakak received 92. The results did not come as a surprise.
On Saturday, Benabdallah received 8 times the number of supporting signatures obtained by his rival. The party's statute requires signatures of at least 10 percent of the members for the candidacy to be accepted.
Earlier, Benabdallah announced that he didn't intend to run for a third term. However, right before the conference, he stated that he will run for elections following the request of his colleagues in the party.
Prior to that, the Conference approved the Central Committee, the Political Control and Arbitration Committee and the Financial Control Committee.
The tenth Conference, held under the slogan "New Democratic Approach", discussed several issues, especially the political document that emphasized the party's democratic socialist orientation.
PPS also examined the current state and its political and organizational responsibilities, as well as the party's bylaws, its organizational decisions and new measures to promote the activity of the party branches.
The attendees unanimously approved the decisions.
