Morningside accident: Eyewitnesses describe shock after car mounted pavement and hit mum and child

People in Morningside have spoken out about their shock after a car mounted the pavement on a busy shopping street and hit a woman and her small child.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland told Edinburgh Live:

"Around 2.30pm on Tuesday, 30 June, 2020, police received a report of a road traffic crash involving a car and two pedestrians outside St Columba's Hospice charity shop in Morningside Road, Edinburgh.

“A woman and young child have been taken to hospital by ambulance."

Toys Galore - a shop next door to St Columba's Hospice charity shop - released a statement on Facebook saying that they had been "shaken" by the incident, saying:

"We've had to close today, due to a major incident. We're all a bit shaken and have gone home."

A shopkeeper also revealed the moment she heard a ‘bang’ before a mum and child were injured in the crash

Mother-of-two Samina Rafiq was serving a customer in Scotcleen dry cleaners a few doors up from the scene before chaos erupted.

She told the Daily Record she was left terrified as people flocked to the ‘shocking incident’.

Another eyewitness said that they saw the child "underneath the car, while a second said: "Horrendous accident in Morningside today. Looks bad. Sincerely hope nobody was killed. Never seen so many police cars."

A Caffe Nero worker, located at the corner before where the accident took place, told an Edinburgh Live reporter that she has been left "shocked" and that the staff saw the emergency vehicles flying down the road to the scene of the "horrific" incident. She added that the shop workers "were terrified."

Another woman tweeted that she'd walked down the road where the accident happened with her two year old just an hour before the crash, saying:

"Walked through the accident scene with my two year old son an hour before this happened. Really worrying. Just shows the importance of making Morningside Road more pedestrian friendly."

A local resident who lives close to where the accident happened told Edinburgh Evening News: "I heard (the accident) as I was taking the recycling out. It is just around the corner from me.

"When I got there there were people screaming. It was obvious that the car had mounted the pavement and hit pedestrians.

"People were comforting others.

“They were very upset. It was a horrible thing for anyone to have witnessed."

Another person said they saw the child on the ground surrounded by paramedics.
