Morning of Metro misery is over as Nexus apologise after train breaks down at Gateshead Stadium

A broken down train at Gateshead Stadium stopped all Metros between Monument and Heworth on Monday morning.

The disruption on the Tyne and Wear Metro line began 8.40am as a train failed at Gateshead Stadium station.

Nexus then arranged for the train, which was blocking the line, to be moved off before services resumed.

This resulted in a service suspension between Monument and Hebburn, which was then shortened Monument to Heworth, and then shortened to Gateshead Stadium to Heworth.

Services resumed at 9.39am after the failed train was moved into Pelaw sidings.

While trains were suspended between Monument and Heworth in both directions, tickets were being accepted on Go North East buses.

Across the network, there are ongoing delays due to the earlier disruption, with some signs displaying incorrect information.

A Nexus spokesman said: “We’re sorry for the disruption to services on Monday morning.

“The delays were caused by a train that developed a fault at Gateshead Stadium. That train had to be moved out of the way before we could resume.

“The knock on effect was a backlog of trains heading into the centre of Newcastle. Once the broken down train had been moved to a set of sidings we restarted between Gateshead Stadium and Heworth.

“The Metro train fleet is now 40 years old. These trains have served us well but due to their age we are seeing more break downs than we used to.

“Nexus is in the process of investing in a new fleet of trains that will help us to transform reliability and comfort. Five companies are bidding for the contract to design and build our new fleet. We will announce the preferred bidder at the end of the year and aim to have the first of the new trains in service by late 2021.”
