Morning everyone. Donald Trump says Israeli hostages could be released as early as Monday as Israel and Hamas continued to progress towards a peace deal. Hamas’ chief negotiator welcomed the deal as an “end” to war.

At home, Labor’s Socialist Left faction could target Mark Dreyfus’s seat, the Coalition is accused of importing Trump-style politics, and what to do when your partner doesn’t understand your love of sport.

Australia

  • Rallying point | Yesterday’s decision by the NSW court of appeal to ban pro-Palestine supporters from staging a march in Sydney has raised fears among human rights activists that the right to protest is being eroded. Jordyn Beazley looks at what the ruling means.

  • Exclusive | Labor’s Socialist Left is moving to cement its dominance in Victoria, using a renegotiation of the factions’ stability pact to push for the federal seat of Isaacs now held by Labor Right member Mark Dreyfus.

  • Braveheart call | Child protection campaigners Bravehearts say the rights of victims must be protected in a plan to give federal law enforcement agencies legal protections to possess and share child sexual abuse material to target criminals online.

  • ‘Not the USA’ | Labor has accused the Coalition of importing Trump-style culture wars to damage Australia’s international migration program, defending tight controls on overseas arrivals and blaming conservative MPs for “dog whistling”.

  • Exclusive | Sportsbet was invited to a Labor party fundraising dinner with an Albanese government minister earlier this week, despite bipartisan calls for the party to ignore lobbying from the wagering industry and introduce tougher regulation.

World

  • Market warning | The chances of the US stock market crashing is far greater than many financiers believe, according to JP Morgan’s boss, Jamie Dimon, who rates the prospect at a 30% chance rather than the 10% priced in by most. Young people entering the workforce are facing a “job-pocalypse” as business leaders invest in AI rather than new hires.

  • Hostage hope | Donald Trump announces all hostages held by Hamas will be released “very soon” – perhaps by Monday or Tuesday – and Israel said it would withdraw troops to an agreed timeline as Hamas’ chief negotiator says the peace deal means “the war is completely over”. Follow developments live. Protests in Tel Aviv’s Hostage Square have ended amid a carnival atmosphere as people anticipate the return of loved ones. We also have a photo essay on the devastation from two years of the war. In related news, Norway is bracing itself for a backlash from Trump if he does not win the imminent Nobel peace prize, an analyst says – but why is he so obsessed with winning it?

  • ‘Visionary’ | The Nobel prize in literature for 2025 has been awarded to Hungarian author László Krasznahorkai for the 71-year-old’s “compelling and visionary oeuvre that, in the midst of apocalyptic terror, reaffirms the power of art”.

  • Professor blocked | A Rutgers University professor who taught a course on anti-fascism has been blocked from leaving the US for Spain on Wednesday night, according to reports, hours after Donald Trump hosted a White House roundtable highlighting the impact of “anti-fascist” far-left activists.

  • Aniston angst | Jennifer Aniston has expressed her disdain for social media and its exploitative effects, saying “it has taken down a huge portion of humanity”.

Nour Haydar speaks to deputy editor, Patrick Keneally, and head of newsroom, Mike Ticher, about the rise of the populist right and the lessons for Australia.

In-depth

The agency responsible for the national disability insurance scheme faces questions in Senate estimates today about its attempts to reduce the size and cost of the scheme. We have heard from dozens of people who say the cuts will seriously affect their care and quality of life. Kate Lyons spoke to one of them, Kieron D’Netto (above), who was left with C4-C5 quadriplegia after a diving accident as a teenager. “They’re putting me in a severe state of neglect,” he says.

Not the news

Rebecca Shaw would like nothing more than to talk about the success of her beloved Brisbane Broncos and Lions. The problem is, her partner doesn’t get it. “It’s very difficult to explain your sports feelings to someone if they don’t understand the base-level appeal,” she writes. “It’s like explaining salt to someone who has never had food.”

Sport

  • Tennis | Novak Djokovic (above) battled past a spirited Zizou Bergs 6-3, 7-5 to reach the Shanghai Masters semi-finals for a 10th time, setting up a clash with surprise package and the world No 204, Valentin Vacherot.

  • Cricket | England should beware of a “terminally obsessed” Marnus Labuschagne going back to basics and forcing his way back into Ashes contention.

  • Football | Tottenham have received a cash boost of £100m from their owners, the Lewis family trust, with further funding poised to boost Thomas Frank.
