Gethin Jones has just shared some brilliant news and fans couldn’t be happier for him. The Morning Live presenter is stepping into a major new role as he’s been appointed “Chef de Mission” for Team Wales at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The 47-year-old Cardiff-born star made the announcement on Instagram, posting a string of photos that show him getting stuck in with Welsh athletes and looking every bit the proud team leader. And no, he joked, it doesn’t mean he’ll be doing the cooking, reported the Express.
He wrote, “I am beyond proud to share that I have been appointed ‘Chef de Mission’ for @team_wales for @glasgow_2026. Mae’n anrhydedd enfawr. And no… I won’t be the designated team cook!” For those unfamiliar with the title, ‘Chef de Mission’ is a French term that means Head of Mission — the person in charge of leading and representing the team at the Games.
This isn’t the first time Gethin has been involved with Team Wales either. He was part of the squad at the 2018 Gold Coast Games where he worked as an attaché, and clearly, it left a lasting impression. “Back in 2018, I had the privilege of travelling to the Gold Coast Games as Team Wales Attaché. It was one of the best experiences of my career, and I knew then that I wanted to be more involved,” he said.
Determined to step things up, Gethin went back to university to study High Performance, Governance, Leadership and Culture — proper serious stuff. Since then, he’s gathered loads of experience working with major sporting organisations like the NFL, WRU, the Rugby League World Cup, London 2012 and Rio 2016. All of that work has led him to this moment, and he couldn’t be more chuffed. “I could not be more excited for what’s ahead. 400 diwrnod i fynd!” he added, counting down the days in Welsh.
Plenty of familiar faces were quick to cheer him on in the comments. Radio presenter Sara Cox said, “If I was on a mission I can’t think of anyone else I’d want to head it up! You’re so perfect for this gig. Massive congrats & good luck to you & @team_wales for Glasgow 2026.”
Welsh swimmer and Commonwealth Games medallist Jazz Carlin also chimed in with, “Amazing news!!!! Congratulations.”
And fans were right there with them, flooding his post with praise. One wrote, “Outstanding Geth! Not just being the perfect person for the role with your genuine love enthusiasm and generous nature but on the work you’ve put in to get there. That’s leadership. What a mission!!”
The Games, which are being hosted in Glasgow from 23 July to 2 August 2026, will include 10 sports: athletics, swimming, netball, track cycling, weightlifting, judo, boxing, bowls, artistic gymnastics and basketball. With Gethin now at the helm for Wales, it’s clear there’s a real buzz already building for what’s to come.
