Morne Morkel has extended his contract with Surrey for a further year, which will keep him at The Kia Oval until the end of next summer.

The South African pace bowler was inspirational during his first season with the club, taking 59 Championship wickets at 14.3 to help them to their first title since 2002.

Morkel, 34, originally signed a two-year deal with Surrey after a distinguished international career, in which he took 309 wickets in 86 Tests at 27.6.

Surrey will begin the defence of their title at home against Essex, starting April 5, a repeat of the final game of last season, in which they suffered their only defeat of the campaign in the four-day game.

Before that, Surrey take on an MCC XI in Abu Dhabi in the Champion County fixture from March 24.
