Morley gets £24 million from Leeds Council to transform town centre with more cycling routes and 'innovation hub'

Morley will be getting more than £24 million in funding from the council.

Leeds City Council will be providing £24.3 million in funding to Morley for a "range of schemes" in the area. They said they would consult with local residents on the plans.

Some of the priorities they listed for the area included "new and improved public spaces" and specifies "key" improvements to Town Square and Queen Street. The council also lists "significant" developments in local parks and playgrounds.

Travel around Morley is another area highlighted for improvements and the focus will be on cycling and pedestrian routes with better access to the train station. There will be "enhanced routes" around town to improve access to existing highways with better crossings and junctions.

A "White Rose innovation hub" is also planned to complement a new technology focused campus of Leeds City College. Enhancements to Morley Town Hall will help bring more events and activities to the town.

Gerald Jennings, chairman of the Morley Town Deal Board, said: "A great deal of hard work over the past 18 months by the Town Deal Board, Leeds City Council and most importantly, the people of Morley has gone into securing this funding.

"The consultations we ran highlighted the people’s appetite for a better connected, more dynamic Morley that is a healthy and happy place to live and work while simultaneously recognising and protecting its incredible heritage.

"I believe that the initial plans encompass all these ambitions and more. I look forward to working with the people of Morley on the design and delivery stages."

One other element of the plans is a heritage grant fund which will be offered to businesses to invest in shop fronts and to invest in buildings along Queen Street. There are also plans to bring vacant heritage buildings back into use.

Councillor Helen Hayden, Leeds City Council’s executive member for infrastructure and climate, said: "The Town Investment Plan is a real opportunity to build a better future for Morley.

"Not only will these plans bring essential health, environmental, and transport improvements and secure the town’s heritage, they will deliver excellent education and job opportunities for the future."

The Morley Town Deal Board will hold a drop-in event at Morley Town Hall on November 19 between 11am and 1pm to answer questions about the plans. Board member, Andrea Jenkyns MP, said: "The government’s £24.3 million, once-in-a-generation investment into Morley, looks to bolster our local offering and ensure that our economy, our high street, and our town goes from strength to strength.

"Decisions must prioritise the wants and wishes of the people of Morley, must offer accountability and transparency, and –above all – offer value for money for every pound of taxpayers' money spent."
