Moritz Jenz celebrations with Celtic fans should have seen him off says former ref

Moritz Jenz should have had a red card to go along with his Celtic debut goal, according to an ex-ref.

The big defender was drafted into the starting lineup away to Ross County after Stephen Welsh was ruled out through illness. And Jenz came up trumps for his new team with less than ten minutes remaining, heading the Hoops back in front after Alex Iacovitti had cancelled out Kyogo Furuhashi’s opener.

Liel Abada sealed the win in stoppage time as Ange Postecoglou 's side made it two wins from their opening two Premiership fixtures. But one former whistler believes Jenz should be sitting in the stands after the next two games because he jumped in to join the fans during his celebrations. The laws of the game state that any player leaving the pitch and entering the crowd should be cautioned. Given Jenz had already been booked, that would have seen him sent for an early bath.

Des Roache doesn't agree with the law, but insists official Don Robertson should have followed it and ensured Celtic played out the remainder of the match with ten men.

He told the Get Involved Referee podcast : “Celtic have got away with one there because Jenz should be missing two games two weeks down the line.

“If you jump into the crowd or take your top off it’s an automatic yellow card so it should have been a second caution. I know it was late on in the game, tensions are high but laws are laws – it should have been a caution.

“I actually think that kind of celebration and euphoria should be encouraged. As someone who likes to see goals, don’t dull it. I don’t agree with the law, but it is the law and it should have been applied.

“I think the way they look at it is that it could endanger the safety of the fans. There could be a crush, which I understand. But have a feel for the game. Is it that bad a thing to do? No.”
