Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics organizing committee President Yoshiro Mori said the Games "will go ahead regardless of the coronavirus pandemic," during a meeting on Tuesday at the Liberal Democratic Party headquarters.
"The question is not whether or not to hold the Games, it's how should the Games be held? Let's think about a new Olympics," Mori said.
The organizing committee and the government revealed preparations for the Games and pandemic countermeasures at the meeting, during which it was announced that the schedule for the Torch Relay slated to start on March 25 will not be shortened, and strict measures will be in place to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
On the possibility of a spectator-free Games, LDP Secretary General Toshihiro Nikai said at a press conference on Tuesday: "It's obvious that having spectators would be best for the athletes. I hope and expect the event can be successfully held with spectators."
