Morgan Smith keen to get promoted London Broncos bucking again

Morgan Smith believes rock bottom London Broncos can start recapturing their early season form at Wigan tonight.

The promoted Broncos were widely written off as relegation certainties before the campaign kick-off, only to win three of their first seven matches.

But they have now lost seven games in a row including being dumped out of the Challenge Cup by Championship Halifax, turning the spotlight back on them at the bottom.

Smith said: “We’re just falling short at the moment but hopefully we can fix that up, starting at Wigan.

“They’re finding their feet a more more and playing some better rugby but we need to focus on ourselves.

“We beat them down in London which was a bit achievement for a newly-promoted team against the champions.

“They’ve got a big reputation and history in the game so to beat them on our own patch was a big thing for us.

“We need to go back to basics a bit.

“We’re a team that likes to throw the ball around a bit, but we need to get into the grind a bit more in games.

“If we can defend we’ve got more chance of winning - our attack will take care of itself.”

Playmaker Smith joined the Broncos during the close season in search of regular first team rugby after struggling to cement a regular place at Warrington.

He insists not event the subsequent season-ending injury to Wolves stand-off Kevin Brown provided any regrets - and has instead thrown himself into inspiring the next generation of London-born players.

Smith added: “I’ve been helping out coaching the scholarship lads at 15s and 16s once a week.

“At first it was a bit of something to do when I first came down here to break up the week, but I’ve found it really enjoyable.

“It’s expanding my game too - I’m only 21 but I’m telling the young lads what they should be doing and it makes me think about my game.

“I was getting limited game time at Warrington and there was an opportunity to try and further my own career down here so I was a bit selfish about it really.

“I’ve really enjoyed it and think I’ve made the right decision.

“The players all live down here and we’re in each other’s pockets doing stuff together.

“We take that onto the pitch and that’s what’s helped get us the wins we have.”
