Morgan Schneiderlin leaves Everton and Marco Silva with conundrum ahead of crucial transfer window

This season has been one of many ups and downs in general for Everton - but perhaps that feeling is no more prevalent than when viewing Morgan Schneiderlin in particular.

The Blues have gone through spells of looking like they could beat any side put in front of them, but have also endured periods in which every time an opponent attacks they seem to score.

Along the same lines, the midfielder has experienced a rather inconsistent campaign to say the least.

The Frenchman was talked up by his new manager Marco Silva before the campaign, who identified his profile as a key role in the system he likes to play.

Following on from that, Schneiderlin was handed starts in the first two matches of the term and he played well - in particular playing a deft pass from a quick free kick to allow Theo Walcott to score against Southampton.

Already this was a far cry from the player Everton fans had seen in the previous season.

Granted there were very few Blues stars that came out of 2017/18 with any sort of credibility after one of the club's most dismal recent campaigns, but Schneiderlin bore the brunt of a lot of criticism.

Many believed that the summer would be the end of the midfielder's time at Goodison Park after a term which has seen him look so far away from the player Ronald Koeman signed back in 2017.

But, Silva showed faith, and was being repaid for that at the beginning of his reign on the blue half of Merseyside.

However after the 29-year-old was substituted in the first half against West Ham, the midfielder spent a lot of time on the sidelines.

The form of Andre Gomes was quite clearly a massive factor here, but the last few months have seen the Barcelona loanee drop out of the side on a number of occasions - most recently due to suspension.

In his stead, Schneiderlin has been the man given the nod. And he has proven why Silva was keen to draw attention to his profile ahead of this season even getting underway.

Without the influential Portuguese international to call upon, Everton have had to change their system.

No other player in the squad can match the 25-year-old's quality on the ball and strength off it, so the boss has needed to find another way to combat opponents.

Schneiderlin has offered the perfect chance to achieve that.

Over the last few weeks the form of Idrissa Gueye has rightly been highlighted, with the Senegalese international looking much more composed and comfortable with the ball at his feet and attacking defences.

That is because he's been allowed to travel further towards the opposition final third with his midfield partner sitting deep.

Schneiderlin was a surprise inclusion in the side to face Cardiff at the end of February and looked brilliant despite that being his first start since October.

His form was good enough to earn the Frenchman a starting place in the Merseyside Derby shortly afterwards, and again he played a crucial role as the Blues earned a 0-0 draw.

Gomes regained his place in the side for the next few games, but his recent suspension has opened the door for his teammate once more.

The last three matches have shown Everton fans a side of Schneiderlin many might have believed had gone missing.

He has been comfortable, mature, composed and almost gliding around the pitch with ease as the Blues have earned themselves seven points - and not conceded a goal.

His ability at not just spraying delightful passes across the pitch, but creating a strong barrier in front of the back four have been crucial.

And it has certainly set up an interesting conundrum for the manager heading into the summer.

There's little doubt Schneiderlin will have wanted more game time this season, and on the balance of his performances he has probably deserved that.

With doubts over the potential long-term future of Gomes, there could well still be a role for the Frenchman at Goodison Park.

However, if the Portuguese international does make a move on a permanent basis, you wonder where that would leave Schneiderlin.

He's proven he can still be a vital player in this squad, but he also represents someone the Blues could ultimately recoup a lot of money on.

Regardless of where his future lies though, the midfielder has put himself into an interesting position.

And one that will be a tough issue to rectify.
