Morgan Gibbs-White reveals 'unbelievable' Nottingham Forest game-plan that confounded Brighton

Morgan Gibbs-White says Nottingham Forest will be boosted by move out of the bottom three after last night’s raucous 3-1 win against Brighton.

The Reds scored twice in the second half, through Danilo and a Gibbs-White penalty to snap an 11-game winless run and move above Leicester and Everton into 17th place.

They are also level on points with Leeds United and showed the kind of fighting qualities that suggests they could yet dodge relegation.

After all Steve Cooper ’s men had to recover from missing an early penalty and then going a goal behind to level through an own goal just before the interval. Danilo struck midway through the second half before Gibbs-White mate the points safe from 12 yards.

The 23-year-old was euphoric: “It’s massive, especially with the run of form we have been on, it’s not been good enough,” Gibbs-White told BT Sport. “I thought tonight the boys showed so much character, so much belief. We stuck together, followed the game-plan and we got the result that we needed.

“We had to stay calm and composed and we knew if we stayed calm and composed, stuck to the plan then we would get a result and thankfully enough we got the three points.

“The game plan was to sit in, sit in, sit in then when we smelt the press we went for it. That’s where the [second] goal came from. Fair play to Danilo, it was an unbelievable goal and he has helped us out massively.

“It [being out of the relegation zone] is absolutely huge for us, we needed these three points today more than ever. We have got to take it on to the weekend now and try and improve and get three points again and just keep building.”

One key element of the game, other than the two injuries Forest sustained, were the two penalties. Brennan Johnson saw his saved by Jason Steele and was not on the pitch when Lewis Dunk was alleged to have handled. Gibbs-White stepped up and sent the Brighton goalkeeper the wrong way.

“It [the penalty miss] happens you have to stay positive, you have to be behind them you have to be supportive. Brennan is an unbelievable player, he was unlucky tonight, he could have had a couple. But that’s just the way football is.

“You have just got to be calm composed, it is what it is, there’s not really much to say about penalties. You have just got to pick the spot and put it there and luckily enough the ‘keeper went the wrong way.
